Mokave Cat

Although 2009 was a tough year for most people, the demand for these amazing felines continued to be high. Unfortunately, I can only produce a couple dozen kitten at most each year.

The stories and most of the photos shown below were sent to me from the Pet Parents of my 2009 Mokaves. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

King Akio

Akio has a great-looking face. He is an easy-going cat that produced wonderful offspring!

King Cairo & Tigger Shalei

This economy has been hard on everyone. I had two families this year ask me to rehome their Mokave cats because they could no longer keep them. I'm grateful to both families for trying to do right by their pets. King Cairo was a gorgeous, easy-going boy who was rehomed to a local Jacksoville lady, who also adopted my other beautiful Mokave, Tigger, whom she renamed Shalei.

"We made it home half in the crate, half on my lap. He was a perfect angel driving. We put him in our master bedroom with bathroom, and he's doing great. He's extremely playful and has gone over every inch in the bedroom, and, of course, getting into mischief. He carries his toys in his mouth, and even grabbed my sneaker shoelace and pulled my sneaker from one room to the other."

"He is eating well and using the literbox. He's definitely much more setttled in today than yesterday. He even enjoys playing in the dripping water in the sink. He's just doing great!"

"Wow, Tigger likes to hide! We thought we lost her twice! I found her asleep in the garbage can. She also got a bath today; she did great! She loves to cuddle afterwards. She growled like a wildcat at the sliding door blinds - she was running around so fast, she ran into them and they scared her -- it was so funny! She LOVES her cat tree! I'm so glad that we got it for her. She loves to play with the little toys on it and take her catnaps up top."

"Tigger went to the vet yesterday; they all wanted to see her -- she was a celebrity! They said that she is perfect. She can jump really high and she loves feathers. She is so great! She seems very happy. She sleeps with me at night and is so loving. Tigger is great with the kids. She lets my five year old pick her up and doesn't whine at all. Tigger is a great addition to our family! She is certainly anyone's dream cat!"

"Tigger has learned to pee in the toilet! It took about 1 1/2 months. She is such an amazing cat!"

"Thanks for all your emails... keep them coming. I truly enjoy hearing about Tigger. It makes me feel so good to know that she is happier where she is now; it definitely makes it easier, knowing that she's having fun. When I told my eldest daughter, Tori, that we found Tigger a new home, she cried hard for about 2 hours. Brad still talks about the cattery tour, and one of your Mokave Kings that was huge and so loving; I can't remember his name, but he was AWESOME! So maybe someday we'll get another Mokave..."

"Oh thank you so much, Nora, for Cairo - such a beautiful, high-quality cat! You are truly giving me a gift. When I read your email, I was all smiles and teared up a bit. I knew when I first heard about you rehoming Cairo that I really wanted him. Right place, right time... it was just meant to be. Since I met him, he has not left my heart and mind. I didn't sleep much as Ikept thinking about how nicely he will fit into my world. Tell everyone that he already has a new mommy!!!"

"Cairo is a good cat and been a true delight. He is very playful, high energy, and really enjoys climbing. I just have to watch for breakables and hazards, but no problem... we have fun! I just love the way Cairo carries things in his mouth. My husband has absolutely fallen in love with this cat!! He is a true cat lover and is Cairo's godfather if something ever happens to me."

"I have spoken highly about you as a breeder as I totally respect the way you care and do business. You carefully and ethically handled the rehoming of Cairo. Thank you so much for him!"

"Have I told you how much I love Cairo? Everyone in my family has fallen in love with him!!! He has to be the center of attention. He is fun and lovable! I really think that his 'different' personality is cool and interactive. I plan to get him a playmate in the near future. I think I may want a retired Mokave Bengal..."

"Tigger Shalei has gorgeous bright green eyes. She hissed at Cairo at first, but she has come a long way with her temperment and is getting sweeter everyday. She loves her new mommy now and her cuz Cairo. Shalei was laying in my husband's lap just loving on him the other night. You would not believe what a different cat she is from when she first arrived -- it didn't take long at all. Now she is so needy of love and attention. Drama queen!!! We are blessed to have her and Cairo."

"Just as I suspected... the cats have been involved in some sort of secret feline activity... judging by their innocent poses when I entered the room. Sure enough, I actually caught Cairo in the act of printing classified documents! Apparently they have been using the shredder as I discovered the motor to be warm the other day. My investigation is ongoing and I do not have all the facts yet... will inform you when I gather all the evidence and figure out what their scheme is! LOL!!!"

"Cairo loves to lay on the printer and actually turns it on! The other day he went a step further and pushed the print button, jumped off, and watched the page print. I caught this on film. Shalei loves her new scratching sleigh. She is so attached to me now, she has to be around me all the time."

King Genghis & Queen Jaguara

Genghis was my own personal cat. Totally leash-trained and used to being out in public. He would sit in the passenger seat while I went to the bank or other errand. Because he was such a social kitty, I decided he would be happier living with Sunny. "Jing Jing" turned out to be sterile so I never got to see what his offspring would have look like... however, he is still a "king" in my eyes!

Queen Jaguara had a hard life before she came to live at my cattery. Her leg was broken as a kitten and by the time it was healed, she had developed a fear of humans. Fortunately, she did not pass this trait on to her kittens.

King Phoenix

King Phoenix was a foundation stud for my Mokave Lynx line, which has since been merged into my Mokave Jag Cat line. Phoenix was so tiny as a baby, that I thought he wouldn't make it. As you can see, he grew up to be a really BIG, sweet boy who provided me with some awesome offspring to carry on my breeding program. At 3 1/2 years, Phoenix was retired and placed with a wonderful couple from South Carolina, who drive down to my cattery to pick him up in person. These are their comments...

"We are about halfway home, and Phoenix has been so good that he has been pretty much snoozing the entire drive, just popping his head up to look around occasionally ...what a good boy!"

"We have made it home safe and sound. Phoenix is in his room and a bit startled, but out of his crate and walking around investigating everything. He is doing very well with us he is now letting us bet him a few times each without backing away... I am playing with him all the time."

"Just wanted to let you know Phoenix is doing great. He has pretty much bonded with the both of us... but always comes to me first. He is warming up to Palmer the dog as well. Phoenix has only been out of his room for the past 2 days."

"Phoenix is still doing great. As you can see by the pictures he has taken over. He and Palmer, our Bull Terrier, get along great, too. Phoenix has now seen Sheba, our F2 Savannah. He is talking up a storm to her but she does not like him... Look at the size difference in him and Sheba on the staircase."

"Sheba is starting to come around to Phoenix. He really really wants to be around her but she goes after him when he gets close. I know it's a territory thing. Here are a few more pics of Phoenix where you can see how much bigger he is than our 14-pound F2 Savannah cat."

King Reno

Reno is awesome - so sweet and gentle. Every time he'd see a human, he'd flip over on his back so you could rub his belly. You could carry him around like a ragdog; he loved it!

Queen Rowan

Rowan is a gentle soul inside a very pretty kitty. She is the only purebred domestic I have ever used in my breeding program (I searched for over a year to find just the right fur color). Rowan produced two of my largest kings, Pyrr and Goliath!

"Noticed that you have Rowan up for retirement. What a beautiful cat! Originally, when my family and I decided to get a unique kitty, we started looking at the Maine Coon cats. One link led to another and I eventually found your site. I must admit, the name "Mokave Cats" caught my attention. Anyway, I was wondering how you thought that Rowan would get along with her former 'sweetheart' Dakota?"

Rowan & Goliath

Rowan and 17-Day-Old Goliath

"You were right, Rowan is night and day different than Dakota. Not a peep from her the whole way home. Got her in the house and let her out in our bedroom. Right away she was under my wife's dresser(still dunno how she managed to get UNDER it!). Left her for 2 min (to get her food/litter tub) and she was already out and about. 15 min later she was up on the bed purring while I petted her! She actually slept on the bed with us!

This morning she was attacking my feet under the covers and rolling around on top of us and the bed. She seemed all excited and totally at home. What a suprise and what a sweetheart she is! And what a MOTOR she has too!

Around noon today, we brought Dakota in (holding him/petting him) to see her. She didn't give him the time of day! She just bounced and rolled around on the bed and then all over the room! Dakota on the other hand... He was NOT a happy kitty! Tail fluffed up and growling. After a couple of minutes we put him back out of the room. We tried again a few minutes ago and he was much, much better, though still obviously not happy. She did sniff him and then hiss and growl for a sec. Then back to checking everyting else out...! Me thinks they will do fine."
